About Fossil Free Somerville
Fossil Free Somerville (FFS) is a grassroots group of Somerville residents, city workers and retirees who are committed to building a strong climate movement and a future free from fossil fuels. FFS successfully campaigned to get the Somerville Retirement Board to adopt a new statement of investment objectives that includes considering the impact of climate change in its investment decisions.
It is now pursuing legislative action at the state level that would allow Somerville to complete its divestment goals, as well as allow other independent retirement systems across the state to make their own decisions regarding fossil fuel investments.
In addition, FFS pursues strategies to foster a just system based on 100% renewable energy. It is the group’s goal for Somerville to be a leader in equitable sustainability and act as an example for other cities in the state of Massachusetts and the United States.
FFS works with allied organizations and legislators around the city and state to further shared goals.
